No fewer than nine persons were hospitalised as an articulated vehicle rammed into seven vehicles at the Deeded Njaba Bridge on the Owerri/Orlu Expressway.
Uju Onwudiwe, who represents the Njaba constituency at the state House of Assembly, stated this while moving a motion to urge the state governor, Emeka Ihedioha, to begin the urgent repair of the Njaba Bridge.
The lawmaker said she shed tears when she got to the scene of the accident and saw things for herself.
She said the accident could have been averted if the damaged bridge had been repaired.
Onwudiwe stated, “Mr Speaker and my colleagues, you need to see what happened at the Njaba Bridge. That accident would have been averted if the damaged bridge had been repaired.
“As a lawmaker and as a mother, I am very concerned. It could have been any of us. As I speak, nine persons are still hospitalised and other have gone. I also urge that the cars be removed from the roads before hoodlums hijack the situation.”
While urging her colleagues to support the motion, she said that lives should not be politicised.
Eddy Obinna (Aboh Mbaise), who spoke against the motion, said the road could not be given speedy attention because of paucity of funds.
He reminded the House that the legislature had declared a state of emergency on all roads in the state.
The Speaker, Collins Chiji, who presided over the plenary, said nobody was opposing the motion.
The motion scaled through when it was put to a voice vote by the Speaker.
